Dermal fillers and hyaluronic acid
Most people’s first contact with dermal fillers Kent is from horror stories of misapplications or celebrity gossip pages. But there is a lot more to fillers and the application of hyaluronic acid than meets the eye. Let’s talk about some of the advanced techniques that we use here at Stangrove Court Dental Practice.
Ways to use fillers
Dermal fillers Kent use an inert compound called hyaluronic acid; it occurs naturally in our tissue but its concentrations decrease with age, holds many times its own weight in water and is very hydrophilic, forming a translucent gel when it is mixed with water.
It is reabsorbed by the body over time, and the visual effects of fillers usually last for 4 to 6 months before the first signs of wrinkles begin to reappear. By 12 months, the fillers should be completely reabsorbed.
Targeted areas and injection techniques
Specific areas of facial anatomy display the passing of time more clearly. At Stangrove Court Dental Practice, our clinicians focus on those areas, using a range of different injection techniques.
Nasolabial lines extend from the edges of the nose to the corners of the mouth; they become more prominent with age. They are not truly a wrinkle but are very large muscle structures that can be minimised by plumping the surrounding tissue with lines of filler.
To form straight lines of filler, a needle is placed under the skin parallel to the surface and the filler is consistently applied whilst the needle is withdrawn, leaving a line of acid in the wake of the syringe.
Wider areas can be corrected with smaller quantities of filler by using microinjections. Depositing small droplets of filler over a wide area can be used to fill temples and lines across the forehead, smoothing out forehead creases and reducing expressions worsened by worry lines.
Cheek plumping and dimple reduction can be very effectively achieved using a fanning technique; this involves multiple lines of filler dispensed using the line technique but all from a single injection site, appearing to be similar to the spines on a traditional bamboo fan.
Are filler injections painful?
The dermal fillers Kent that we use also contain a local anaesthetic, which minimises any discomfort during injection. If you are concerned about injections, we can also use a local numbing cream before the procedure.
A few hours immediately after receiving fillers, the hyaluronic acid will be highly mobile in the tissue; it is actually this property that allows sculpting immediately after injection to be possible.
But this does mean that you should avoid facial massages, sleeping on your face or putting too much pressure on your face soon after receiving the filler, as you can easily blur or ‘smudge’ the treatment. So avoid all of these activities if possible and try not to apply makeup for at least 48 hours until the fillers have settled.
